Huddersfield Eagles Badminton Club held their annual Christmas tournament on Sunday 18th December 2011, at Newsome High School Sports Centre.

28 of the clubs players took part and the competition was organised into two groups: ‘beginners’ and ‘intermediates and advanced’.

The beginners tournament saw all the players play with and against each other. The standard of badminton from the young players was excellent.  In a closely fought competition the overall winners were Jake Metcalf and Anton Roche.

In the ‘intermediates and advanced’ tournament, the players partnered each other in a series of matches to determine the four players with the highest points total overall, to play off in the Grand Final.

After a couple of hours of intense badminton the top four players were Anna Whitwam, Jacob Birkenhead, Josh Dyson and Daniel Whitworth. The 2 set final was keenly contested, with some excellent rallies being played out by each team. At the end, the top 2 players were Anna Whitwam and Jacob Birkenhead.

That brought an end to an enjoyable morning.  All the players performed well and displayed an excellent standard of badminton.

The Eagles invited coach Graham Howe to the event to speak to the youngsters and present certificates and prizes. The Eagles took over Graham’s Sunday sessions over 4 seasons ago.

Mike Hall, Eagles coach and Chairman said ‘Our thanks go to John Crowther and all our coaches and helpers who staged the event and helped to produce an exciting tournament enjoyed by all. It was also great to see Graham, he’s done a lot for junior badminton over the years and he’s always been very supportive of what the Eagles are doing.’
