Huddersfield Eagles junior badminton club recently  took part in a triangular tournament with teams from Calderdale and Bradford.  The event, which will now take place each year was held at The Ridings sports centre in Halifax.

The evening was a great success with 24 players of all ages taking part, with half the  players taking part coached at the Eagles. Each team fielded 4 boys and 4 girls, so plenty of doubles action, with the final set of games being mixed doubles. Each game was best of three ends, with many of them going to three,  and were very close. At the end of the evening Calderdale came out on top, with the Huddersfield Eagles coming second.

The Huddersfield League had kindly donated The Ian Broadbent Memorial trophy for the event which had been used for junior events a number of years ago.  Ian was one of three founder members of youth badminton and his commitment and experience of the game was a great help in forming the youth badminton teams. As a selector and coach he became their manager. These teams later represented Kirklees in the Yorkshire School  Badminton events.

After Ian passed away Ian, Graham Howe along with his wife Linda continued to develop youth badminton in Kirklees. The Huddersfield Eagles was setup to carry on giving youngsters the opportunity to play badminton when Graham and Linda retired.

'The quality of badminton was excellent, all the players deserve a lot of credit.
We're very grateful that the League have donated this trophy. I recently spoke with  Graham Howe who encouraged me to take my badges. Graham was delighted that the Eagles were taking part, and the trophy was being used to honour  Ian's  name'

Earlier today I completed my skydive. Amazing experience. Travelling at 120 mph at 14,000 feet is fantastic. There was three of us and so far we've raised over £1200. I just want to say a big thank you to all of you who kindly sponsored me. Here's the pic's to prove it!

We can now confirm the start of our summer sessions will be 9.00 - 11.00 on Sunday 23rd May. We've had a bit longer break than normal, but we're looking forward to starting again.
The format will be the same as last year, so turn up, put your name on the board and play games. There'll be no structured coaching, that will start again in September, but our coaches Mike or Ron will be there if anyone wants any help and advice. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Each year we are obliged to hold a meeting to report back to you the members on what the club has been doing for the last year and where it is heading into the future.  We also have to elect the committee for the forthcoming year to run the club on your behalf.  As a member you are entitled to vote on who is elected onto the committee. 

The AGM will be held on Sunday 17th October from 10.15 – 10.35am. 

BEGINNERS SESSION

The beginners session will start as normal at 9.00am on this day but we would ask that you arrange to be collected at 10.35am to enable you to attend this meeting.  Parents are also invited to attend.

ADVANCED AND INTERMEDIATE SESSIONS
We would also ask that those attending the Intermediate and Advanced sessions on this day arrive for 10.10 so that they can attend the meeting and so that it can start and end promptly.  The Intermediate and Advanced sessions will then be combined on this occasion and run on a club play basis as per the summer sessions.  The session will therefore run from 10.35 to 12.30pm.

Both Eagles mens and ladies team take great victories. Read on for match reports....

The Eagles junior womens team made their debut in the womens league and won their opening game against Fartown 4-2. After the first two matches it was all square. The Eagles then took the next two matches with Mellor and Emily Crowther  beating Griffiths and Cato-Bedeau over 3 very close games  21-15,  18-21, 21-15. Amy Crowther and Jessica Hall then beat Peltzier& Cato-Bedau in another tight match over three games, 21-15, 13-21, 21-17. With 2 matches to play the Eagles needed one to secure victory. Sheila Mellor and Amy Crowther managed to beat Val Smith and Sera Griffiths 21-15, 22-18 to give the Eagles their first victory. The Eagles Mens team took their first ever win since joining the mens league with victory in their first match of the new season with a 4-2 victory over St Cuthberts Raqueteers. The Eagles took the first two matches, with St Cuthberts coming back to take the third with Martinek and Chau just edging it over Platt and Birkenhead. The Eagles pairing of Prady and Price-Thomas took the forth game. With two games to go the Eagles needed one game to win the match. The fifth game was very close  with Martinek and Saniezar taking the first end 22-20. Birkenhead and Price-Thomas fought back to take the second end 21-17. In a close third end Martinek and Saniezar won  18-21 to win the 5th game.
